Losing weight

Like most of us, I’ve gained weight over the years and would really like to get in shape and drop down to a ‘normal’ weight for my body type.  I’m about 6 foot 1, so an ideal weight is around 200 pounds.

At 280 pounds, I have a long ways to go.  My blood pressure is also creeping up there, and my cholesterol has always been really high.

It’s been a nice feeling to put all of my goals on paper and then on this website.  It’s allowed me to take a look at them from a high level. I’ve realized that I’m going to need to get in better shape so that I don’t die from a heart attack before I have a chance to finish all of these.

I figure it’s going to take 2-3 years to get down to 200.  At 1 pound a week, it’s going to take at least 1.5 years and judging from the past, weight never drops consistently.

I’m absolutely horrible with dieting.  I love food too much.  So, the only chance I have to accomplish this goal is through a lot of exercise.

The first step is done.  I bought a membership at the local pool & gym for my birthday, and I love to swim.  The second step is going to be a lot harder.  That’s the part where I actually go to the pool.  My plan is to go before work, but it’s been a week and I’ve yet to go once.

Tomorrow is Saturday and will be a perfect day to start training because another of my goals is to swim a mile or 72 lengths of the pool.  Tomorrow, I’ll be happy if I make it across once.

A worthy goal! I’ve never had to lose as much as you, but I did decide a few years back to get myself in better shape, and I’m glad to hear you’re not putting faith in diets! Exercise is the key, along with, not a diet as such, but making good dietary choices. I’d sum those up as: no added sugar; as little processed food as possible; as much fresh fruit and veg as you can shovel down; meat in moderation or not at all; a sprinkling of seeds of various kinds (sunflower, pumpkin, sesame, etc).

As for the exercise, it needs to be moderate in intensity, last at least 30 minutes and happen at least 4 times a week. Do all that and you’ll be fit and slim sooner than you think. Good luck!

Hi Brian, I have also been working on loosing some weight. I have been doing what Steve suggested. I have cut out anything with sugar and eating better foods and fruits. I’m 5′ 6″ and did weigh 215 pounds, after a month now I’m down to 200 pounds. My camera has helped me a lot with keeping me out walking most days. I also drink lots of water, no more sodas for me.
